Some of the changes you’ll find that:
· we are asking you not to capitalize the words chapter or division unless it’s a proper title
· words such as president, newsletter editor, and president-elect are also common nouns and will not be capitalized
· we are now putting a comma between a name and a designation such as: Susan Shamali, CPS/CAP
If you have any questions after reviewing the information, please contact Emily Allen, communications and publications manager at eallen@iaap-hq.org.
(See information below)
Capitalization of Association Names
It’s best for continuity if we work toward consistency in our style of writing association names in our communications. Inconsistency causes confusion for members and nonmembers. Traditionally we have capitalized the following (this is not an exhaustive list): member, association, board, chapter, division, manager, administrative professional, certification, international president, trustee, chapter president, newsletter editor, recertification…None of these should be capitalized since they are all common nouns. Only capitalize if the word is used as part of a proper noun.
Another change that will be effective immediately is we will now be using a comma to set off designations: Susan Shamali, CPS/CAP.
The communications department at IAAP the AP style guide for OfficePro, OfficePro Express and Connections and the Chicago Manual of Style as the guide to all other written communications.
In your communications, please lower case these words unless they are in a correct title. Examples:
Correct When we use IAAP with international board it becomes a proper noun. Association is only capped when it is in our proper title.
The IAAP International Board of Directors met in Reno to discuss matters important to the association.
Incorrect
The Board asked several Members to come to the Board Meeting to discuss their respective Divisions about matters important to the Association.
These are all common nouns and should not be capitalized.
Correct
International President Susan Shamali, CPS/CAP asked the president of the Ohio Division to meet with her at the recent IAAP conference. She also spoke with Emily Allen, communications and publications manager at Spring Conference.
We capitalize Susan’s title because it appears before her name. If we said "Susan Shamali, international president," it would not be capped as in the example of Emily Allen. Ohio Division is a proper title. IAAP conference is not capped since it’s not the title of anything. Spring Conference is capped because it is now the official name of that conference.
Incorrect
Many Administrative Professionals have attained Certification through IAAP. Those who are Certified can earn up to 7 percent more, according to OfficeTeam, an IAAP Corporate Partner.
These are all common nouns. The words in bold should all be lower case.
Be a part of Excellence! Check your accomplishments to the criteria!!! This year’s deadline to meet the requirements is running near! Remember, Certification helps your Chapter & Division meet the Chapter of Excellence/ Division of Excellence criteria. Find the Member of Excellence/ Chapter of Excellence/Division of Excellence criteria at http://community.iaap-hq.org . Go to Member Resources> “Pathways to Excellence “

Retirement Trust Foundation
FOG
So what is FOG? Are we talking about the weather, or what?
Actually, we are talking about the Family of Givers program for the Retirement Trust Foundation (RTF). It could be one those acronyms that we love to use and assume veryone knows. So, to bring you in the know and up to speed, let me tell you about FOG.
The Family of Givers program recognizes your lifetime accumulative gifts to the Trust. There are three levels of personal recognition:
Sustaining: $100 - $499; Leadership: $500 - $999; Pacesetter: $1,000+
We are tracking your donations (using the Family of Givers donation form) and, over time, you could be in the Sustaining, Leadership, or Pacesetter category. The Trust has a Wall of Honor at IAAP headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri, where plaques are placed showing that donors have reached a certain level. Your chapter and division also receive credit for your gift. Another little known fact is, if your employer has a matching gift program, your contribution to the RTF may be eligible to participate in this program. It is worth checking with your employer, because it will double the value of your contribution. In this economic recession, we are seeing more and more people falling into financial hardship. If you are one of the many blessed and generous people who support your community through monetary donations, I hope you will consider becoming a bigger part of your IAAP family by joining the Trust’s Family of Givers. A minimum cumulative donation to the Trust of at least $100, while providing the confidence that your donation is assisting someone in need, also provides rewards as a Family of Givers Program member – all donations are eligible for a tax deduction from Uncle Sam. Participation in FOG is very simple: complete a contribution form (download the form from the RTF website http://www.iaap-rtf.org/) and return it to your RTF chair along with your check. Or, just send/give her your check and she’ll take care of the paperwork for you. Simple.
The Trust is working for you in these ways: Provides housing assistance grants to administrative professionals in need; Maintains the Trust’s website at www.iaap-rtf.org; and Maintains the Vista Grande retirement home in New Mexico and provides an affordable, comfortable environment for all residents.
Now there’s no reason for you not to be in the FOG! Thank you. LaNay Robbins, RTF Committee, Northwest District, Lanay.robbins@inl.gov
